You can use the Gmail web interface _or_ a smartphone app to take advantage of it. I don't own a smartphone (ludicrously expensive to operate one in Canada). I use the Gmail web interface at home and I'm able to access my mail in many places I travel using my iPod and WiFi. Very handy.
