Certainly if you don't have a Gmail account you *cannot* use their interface.
I was just correcting the notion that "I must have Gmail & a smart phone to use this?" -- it's an "or" not an "and" equation. Perhaps only of interest to pedants, which means it's fascinating on PDML.
