That certainly worked for us when our shepherd/malemute cross tried to see off the black and white kitty in the yard. Repeated washings (including a deodorising pet shampoo) didn't help, but rubbing a big can of tomato juice well into the fur, followed by yet another trip through the shower, gave us a dog that we could at least allow into the same room.
