Hum, adding a neutralizer to a week acid would seem to negate any oxidation advantage from the week acid. I could see just using Peroxide then the bicarb in series, but mixing them together seems counter intuitive.

Ever tried it Darren? It's also an old wive's tale. Didn't work for
us, or rather our dog. Multiple shampooings and using the hair drier
on low on him *eventually* did the trick. Our vet pointed out that
heat is needed to evaporate the volatile oils in the skunk scent.

But this seems to be the best way:

A tomato juice bath is the "old school" remedy. (For the skunk, not
the overcooked film).

A few hours ago I suddenly smelled... skunk. For a second I thought it was
just odd but then ... oh crap! Ran outside and as soon as I opened the door
a very stinky cat charged in. I feel bad for the poor guy - it looks like he
took it directly in the right eye, which just now has finally opened up. I
rinsed off his eye gave him a shower and three washings with a hydrogen
peroxide, baking soda, and detergent mixture. He's confined to my office for
a while (or the yard) - I can say that the odor removing solution, which
seemed to work, has either worn off or new stuff is coming to the surface.

Oh yeah - and the front steps (where it all happened) smell great.

I had just started developing a roll of film when I smelled the skunk... it
was going to be a 45 minute semi-stand process but turned into a 90 minute
full stand... The results are not all bad but a bit overcooked.
