The only way to keep a negative perfectly flat is to use a cover
glass. The Beseler negatrans uses one, and makes for a nice flat
neg. It also adds a couple more level surfaces for dust to
adhere to.
I use a 23C Dual Dichroic for my 6x7 and smaller stuff. I like
diffuser printing, and I enjoy the convenience of the dichroics
for contrast control.
One of the nice things about T-Max film is how inherently flat
the film stays. I quite like TMY in medium format, where the
grain is not an issue.
I think colour heads are the coolest heads as well. Cold lights
are cooler, only when compared to condenser heads. I haven't had
film popping problems with either my cold light or my colour
head.
My second choice for black and white would be a VC cold light
head.
