I think that it is becoming clear that the APS-C format hits a real sweet spot for making use of a LOT of legacy glass, as well as having digitally optimized lenses available. I can't tell you how happy I am with the K-5ii. You don't have to give up the wide end (as much as you do with 4/3). Lots of reasonable choices are there, like the Pentax 12-24mm and the Sigma 10-20mm (with their effective 15-18mm FOVs). And you get a decent 50% boost on the telephoto end (with a 200mm giving you an effective 300mm FOV). The sensor is large enough that you can keep noise down, even with a lot of pixels on the sensor, and shallow DOF is available with fast lenses, if that is your thing.
I agree with this assessment. In fact, I should amend it by noting that APS-C DSLR is certainly not a sweep spot. K-01 could be as far as Pentax K mount goes. Further, Sigma 10-20 is rather monstrous in its size. Pentax 12-24 seems somewhat smaller/lighter. In my view sweet spot is Fuji lines of cameras and the likes of Ricoh GXR.
To clarify it even further, I am talking from the standpoint of my style/needs of shooting. Yours is obviously different, and thus K-5 suits you. Which is a good thing.
The new Sony cameras give you nothing other than the big sensor. You give up the shake reduction. One guy on dpreview put it this way: + Fullframe Sensor: K-5=no A7=yes - Autofocus: K-5=yes A7=no - Lens Correction: K-5=yes A7=no - Viewfinder: K-5=OVF A7=EVF ? GPS: K-5=optional A7=? - Image Stabilization: K-5=yes A7=no Other than getting a full frame sensor, everything else is a big downgrade.
Darren, do tell me - are you being serious here? I mean - you don't have to preach Pentax to members of Pentax Discuss Mailing List, do you?
