You might want to consider a 28-105 f4 - 5.6 power zoom. I did some
informal testing / playing around while bored this weekend and was
really impressed with how sharp my copy of this lens is on the K-3. At
50mm f8 it was pretty close to the A 50 f1.4, which actually surprised
me. I use it mostly on film bodies and will say that it does have some
softness in the corners and edges on film exposures but is still quite
good. Drawbacks are that it is heavy (due to the useless power zoom
feature), slow (f4 - 5.6), variable aperture and has a rotating front
element. None of those are really show stoppers for me. I sometime use
the power zoom on the Mz-S and Pz-1p.
I also tested my copy of the FA 28-70 f4. Clearly not on par with the
28-105 but pretty good. Back in the film days I actually preferred it to
the 28-105 - maybe my copy is deteriorating. I would not recommend going
with one of these, though.
Good luck!

I have been using my Pentax 20-35 MM and a Sigma 70-300 MM and have
been mostly happy with the results from these two lenses on my ist

Manual Zoom and focus) and I think it is time to replace it. It seems
as though both Tamron and Sigma have mid range zooms that have
received nice reports. I have been pleased with my long Sigma and may
be swayed in that direction. But before I go do something, I am
curious about what the group would go to and how they think a future
camera upgrade might affect the choices?
