I too have the Epson V500. For an inexpensive flatbed, it does an excellent job 
on transparencies and negatives. Here’s a scan of a 6x6 BW neg. The photo.net 
page on which this pic resides is comprised almost entirely of scans made on 
the V500, many from 35mm transparencies. Most of the quality problems are 
evident in the originals. The scanner did a darn good job.
