I have a friend that asked me to recommend a scanner that he could buy that
would be able to scan slides. He's not interested in large files and only wants
to archive for possible digital projection - no printing.
Any suggestion from list members for such a scanner?
as the replies suggest, several Epson flatbeds (and probably others) do a very
reasonable job, and are of course flexible for other types of scanning; what to
look for is a backlight (in the lid) and a frame to scan multiple slides
simultaneously; my older Epson 4990 has an 8-slide frame, while i understand
some other models can't do so many (usually it is the size of the backlight
that limits the number, but some may charge extra for the frame)
i have scanned several hundred of my stepfather's old slides with my 4990 and
VueScan, which captures in one pass and creates separate files for the eight
slides (i'm sure Epson's driver can do this too, but i distrust it); color
correction of faded slides can be tricky, but VueScan has some helpers
some scanners (inlcuding my 4990) have an infrared channel which facilitates
some limited removal of dust marks (called "Digital ICE"); this is a real
time-saver versus what it takes to clean every slide; it can cause slight
blurring but is fine for non-critical work
