Try the Tokina 28-70 F2.6-2.8 Pro II. It is very good. If price is really a concern, go for Pentax FA 28-70 F8. You loose one F-stop but you gain a factor of 4 in price ($400 to $100). The Pentax is also not well build as the Tokina but the optics is good.
