Andy,

The basic choices are going to be Pentax 28-70/2.8 or 28-70/4, Tokina
28-70/2.6-2.8 Pro II or Sigma (various choices). The general talk
that has been on the list is that the Pentax 2.8 is optically great,
but physically poorly built and very expensive. The Pentax 4.0 lens
is optically quite good, physically mediocre and quite inexpensive.
The Tokina is optically quite good, physically the best built and
reasonable price. It's biggest weakness is flare control compared to
the Pentax offerings. I haven't heard about any Sigma's worth
considering in that focal range.

The usual two come down to the Tokina 28-70/2.6-2.8 Pro II or the
Pentax 28-70/4.0. Some difference in price, speed and build quality.
The Pentax wins on price and flare control, the Tokina wins on optical
and build quality.

In my quest to purchase the 67 glass, I have been selling all lenses
that I could stand to part with. My Tokina 28-70 Pro II is still on
the shelf here. I haven't decided whether to let it go or not. It
can be so darn useful - especially at 2.8 speed. If there is any
interest, let me know. I might consider selling it - mint condition.
