I wouldn't assign this 'truly desperate attempt' to the "mirrorless" domain. I'd assign it to the Samsung cameras domain.
Samsung has been struggling to get market recognition for their brand in cameras since the late 1980s. They bought Rollei and held that for a while, the have rights to use the Schneider name. They have a decent line-up in their " mirrorless" system. But few in the US seem to care about any Samsung camera. Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, and Fuji seems to be doing nicely with these systems. SLRs are still stronger in the US by a good margin, but it's hard to read the market clearly when sales of ALL cameras have taken a huge tumble in the past two-three years, SLRs included. The Sony A7, the Fuji XT-1, the Olympus E-M1, the Panasonic GH4 ... These are all pretty fine cameras. It will take some time yet to see them take the mindspace majority position, mostly because none of them are labeled Nikon or Canon.
