still some points:

Isn't it the same to switch the flash to manual mode ? If you use the AF
280T in TTL position on a camera without TTL the flash does a full flash,
the same like in manual position. Which difference does your solution
provide ?

I use for that a very small flash with guide number 11 powered by a single
AAA cell. 
The results are also nice and I don't need to carry the big AF 280T.
