Dan, it's a good idea but it doesn't work for me.

I think you have two things going on here, each of which merits its own pic: 
first, the receivers in white headed downfield with the red defensive backs 
waiting for them; second, the linesmen colliding while the quarterback waits 
for his moment. The marker in the foreground is a big distraction for the 
latter.

For the first sub-pic, there is too much blur; and I think the idea of panning 
with the receivers has promise. For the second sub-pic, you can't pan because 
the action is heading in different directions; I think a high shutter speed and 
shallow DOF would be your best bets.
