Dave, you have three things going on. 1. You want to rent (not buy) a name. So, now you have davebrooks.ca or whatever. 2. That name needs to be associated with an IP address. So you find an Internet Service Provider who will allow you to “park” your name on their site. They assign you a number from within the range of address numbers they have associated with their business. So now davebrooks.ca is associated with 123.34.43.21 3. Next, you need to have some content to place on the site.
A. You pay an agent to rent the domain name. B. You pay an ISP for the use of their site. Depending on what you pay, you’ll get storage space, 50-100 email accounts, and the ability to install your own programs such as WordPress. C. Do you pay for the privilege of using WordPress? That I don’t know. My main point is that you may find it convenient to find the ISP who will host your WordPress, give you a reasonable rate for the minimal storage and other features you will be using. Then buy/rent the domain name through them. It simplifies your billing, it keeps you from the steps of moving your domain name to its permanent IP address as assigned by your ISP. Not a big deal but IMHO something to avoid if there is no good reason not to. Once you have paid the 1/3/5 year rent on a domain name, it is yours until the term expires and will then go away into the public domain unless you pay another 1/3/5 year rental. But while you have it, you can freely move it around between ISP’s. If you start with one ISP and decide you are not getting good service, you can hook up with another ISP who will associate a new number with the name. That new number then gets propagated through the web and within x hours (used to be 24-36) all Domain Name Servers in the world will know what (new) IP number is associated with your name.
