Canon makes their own sensors, and I have no doubt that they are capable of building a 46mp sensor, so I wouldn't bet the farm it isn't home grown, also just packing 46mp in 2/3 the real estate of the most common medium format sensor will lead to degraded performance. Physics is a bitch and must be appeased.

I'm not an expert on Canon, but if they are going to 46MP it will be a
Sony sensor in the camera (not a Canon sensor). I think Canon has been
stuck realizing that they were at the end of the line as far as
competing successfully with their own sensors.

So it is probably where a Pentax FF will be going eventually. Both
Nikon and Canon are going to offering it sooner.
Whether it performs as well in the dynamic range/high ISO department
remains to be seen. I have difficulty seeing how it could.

Canon may think that they're challenging medium format, but not all pixels

Here is my guess:

36 MP Sony sensor, as found in the Sony A7r and Nikon D810
httDp://www.sonyalpharumors.com/competition-news-nikon-d810-features-
sony-36mp-sensor/

dxomark comparison of those two camera's sensors with the existing
Pentax flagship K-3:
http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Nikon-D810-versus-
Sony-A7R-versus-Pentax-K-3___963_917_914

Same lack of AA filter /SR AA simulation found in the K-3

Pentax FluCard compatibility

Dual SD slots

Similar AF system as the K-3

I'm curious to see the FPS and video capabilities. Curious to see if it
is compatible with the O-GPS1.

ISO range: (Extended: 80-51,200)
I've just had an e-mail in from a dealer telling me about the new Canon
EOS
5DS & EOS 5DS R, which both feature 50.6 MP sensors.

At this rate, the DSLR will be taking on the medium format market as well.

The thought of buying a new body and lenses is bad enough, but with the
file
sizes these cameras must provide, post processing and storage means a real
think about computer hardware as well.
