I'll admit, that I had noticed a little noise in the background, but

Welcome to the twenty first century where an ISO 10,000 photo might
look "a
little rough in the shadows".

yeah, a dramatic image, and your tale encourages me to use higher ISO more

I've had a few images that were shot TAv and I noticed in post that they were shot at or above 10,000.

this is a case where that little bit of noise actually makes a nice
contrast with the foreground subject, makes it look less sterile than it
might with a "clean" background; i think i see some sharpening and
suspect some noise reduction may have occurred (perhaps automatically);
i wonder whether this image was particularly well suited to the
mechanics of those effects

Looking at lightroom, noise reduction is set to luminance of 22, detail of 50 and contrast of 0. Sharpening is set to 25, radius of 1.0 and detail of 25.

The NR luminance is the only one that I remember specifically moving off of default.

i'm no herpetologist, but i'm going to guess ring-necked snake

That's what I was told.
