Reading it right now, interesting and I'm still not sure how much is marketing bullshit. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/features/who-killed-infinity-focus?BI=4906
With the level of electronic communication between the lens and the body, there is no reason that the lens cannot know, and transmit the distance that it is focused on so that it could be stored in EXIF or displayed in the viewfinder. Similarly, it should be possible to recalibrate each lens for infinity focus, which would make night photography much easier. Calibrate it for infinity on the moon, point at your subject and press a menu item to focus that lens at infinity.
With GPS enabled, Exif data could include both the location of the camera, and the calculated location of the point of focus. With focal length, aperture, resolution and GPS data, it would be possible to display depth of field in the viewfinder, and also draw the point and area of focus on a map.
I have often wondered if some zoom designs shift their point of focus at different focal lengths.
