The method often suggested to get the absolute best focus using a manual focus zoom, was to focus zoomed in then zoom out and re-frame at the desired magnification. The plane of focus stayed the same.

They definitely do. Otherwise one couöd zoom in, focus much more precisely and zoom out again. You'll admit that this would be far too easy...
