I'm inclined to suggest that:

The precision for an accurate infinity focus increases the costs of a lens.

May not be possible on a zoom lens.

Manual focus is not used by the vast majority of people who buy cameras, so 
it's added cost for a feature that is useless to most of the customers who care 
more about price.

They definitely do. Otherwise one couöd zoom in, focus much more precisely and zoom out again. You'll admit that this would be far too easy...
