And...don't forget...I have a licensed version of PSE 10 in the box that
you can have. It should run very nicely on the HP with Win7.

At least I can work here until the HP arrives and I can take my time
adjusting to it ...
This is how I got back... opened up AVAST page where it had said You are
unprotected and started scrolling through the side bar - clicked on
upgrade - it let me do it. Then I opened old firefox and went to the
mozilla page and downloaded latest version... voila!
When I called Avast the first time it clearly didn't occur to the
customer service guy that perhaps the reason we couldnt get to the
licensing thing again was that it had already been done. I didn't
know that having paid for the coming year I had to grab the upgrade
myself - I thought THAT was automatic..
Apparently, it didn't occur to first techy at Avast either.
The only thing that is still amiss, and it isn't so important, is
that google chrome seems to have disappeared.
Given that the HP was paid for by my photo sale, essentially, I
feel I should not cancel that - I was going to switch to & eventually
and before when I upgraded systems I did it this way - keeping the old
computer for the stuff that won't run on later versions , and taking
it totally off line.
IF there are problems with Win 7 and Elements 5 I can still get things
done and I even have elements 2 that I occasionally use for things
that they either stopped offering in later versions or I only know how
to do in version 2.
But now that every thing is working again, I have to actually work on
ebay stuff lol
thanks again to everyone for input, sympathy and inspiration

This isn't answering your question, but maybe fixing your sign-in
problem.
I suspect that your sign-ins aren't working because they are being
intercepted/stolen by malware. If AVAST is involved, it may be that
AVAST is trying to prevent the theft.
I would, if possible, download the Free Version of Malwarebytes and
install it. Run a Scan and if it finds stuff see if Malwarebytes can
get rid of it (quarantine it). You will probably need to reboot your
computer after doing this.
Some particularly nasty spyware prevents you from downloading or
installing Malwarebytes and if that is the case you have a problem,
but Malwarebytes is the best program for dealing with this sort of
stuff.

You don't need the PREMIUM.
Hope this helps.
