I really liked the IR converted K10D but I'm seeing some interesting
things with this converted compact camera. With the K10D exposure was
always a crap shoot - which is what you'd expect since the meter is
still based on visible light, not IR. The exposure discrepancies were
not trivial - often more than the +/- 3 stops that could be covered with
the exposure compensation mode. So - that makes it hard to capture the
decisive moment with street photography, and a that is one frustration I
had with the camera.
With the compact camera the metering is off the sensor and it is as
consistent as you'd expect with a visible light camera. I believe that a
DSLR with live view would do the same, or of course the K-01.
Using this compact makes me realize that the ideal IR camera would be a
larger sensor mirrorless with EVF.
I may convert either my K01 or K5 to IR, but can't decide which. I
would probably use the K5 and work with live view whenever possible, and
then fall back to using the view finder if needed. Could probably lock
exposure with live view and then compose using the finder.
This page compares the pros and cons of different camera converted to IR
(the chart at the bottom is very good):

And there is a ton of stuff here:

I am going to assess the results I get with the P6000. With IR a normal
zoom seems to generally cover things, and the P6000 is very good in
terms of image quality. It gets noisy at higher ISO settings but I
notice that most of what I shot yesterday in auto ISO mode was at ISO 64
- even in cloudy scenes - so it seems to have good sensitivity to IR
light. While the camera is slow and full of poorly implemented features
the basic image quality is pretty good. If I do decide to convert
another DSLR, like I said it will probably be something with live view,
like the K5.

Yep I'm thinking of doing it as well. I have a k-10 I could use. Any thoughts

I'm intrigued by the IR conversion, too... I have an *ist-d or a k-7 I'd
consider converting... Any thoughts on which is the better candidate?

Thanks for the link, Mark! I just may convert my k-10D. This idea gets a
serious think. He seems like a nice guy. Read is bio etc.
Might be fun to do Urban IR.
And nice test shots by the way!

With my IR converted K10D only working with manual lenses, I decided to convert
another camera for IR use. Sent my old Nikon P6000 in for the process. While
this is a very flawed camera in terms of poorly implemented features, it takes
good photos and produces a pretty robust 13.5 MP file. The camera arrived this
morning, just as my wife an I were heading out to for our semi annual visit to
the town where I grew up, with the purpose of dropping a couple flower pots on
my parents' graves. So here are some test shots with the newly converted camera
- no interesting compositions but just tests of the cameras abilities:

Those iamges went through the same basic process - a little boost to contrast,
clarity, and saturation in ACR. One in Photoshop I ran macros to switch the
red and blue channels in PS and apply the PS lens correction filter to remove
the distortion. then just a quick adjustment to level the horizon and crop if
needed. For virtually automated processing - the results were great. I am
surprised at how well the camera meters - very accurate where with the K10d I
had to do a bit of adjustment with each shot.
The conversion cost $150 and was done here:
http://www.isaacszabo.com/infrared.html
The K-01 would cost the same to convert but a Pentax DSLR would be $200. I am
toying with the idea of sending in either my K-01 or K-5, but will want to
fully test out the Nikon Compact (its a lot easier to carry...)
