Hi Tom, Both Zerene Stacker and Helicon Focus have trial versions. There is some functionality built into Photoshop too, starting (I think) with version CS. Have a go at the first two an see if you're more comfortable with the workflow in those. It's probably a good idea to view the tutorials too...
