John, I hope I'm wrong, but this part of your email sent off alarm bells: "I'm not so sure about the offer, but I went ahead & requested the new modem, even though when I tried to log into my account, they tell me they can't find me by my email address, by the phone number I used to sign up with TWC Road-runner or by my TWC Road-runner cable internet phone number."
That sounds suspiciously like a phishing scheme where someone makes a web site (or sends an email) claiming to be a legitimate business and imitating their login page to get unsuspecting people to input their log-in info. Check the email and look carefully at the email address domain name to see if it is actually Time Warner. And before entering any log-in information, make sure that the domain is actually the domain you think it is. I nearly got caught myself a week or so ago when I was going to log-in to a Dropbox with my Gmail. Right before I hit "submit" I remembered to check the domain (which was not entirely showing on my phone screen) and was surprised to see it wasn't Dropbox at all. Phishing scheme. Stopped in the nick of time.
