How much of that price is tax deliberately imposed to discourage
consumption? That's why gas costs so much in the UK and parts of Europe.

Or to offset the cost of highway maintenance. I have the impression that
Australia has a lot higher miles:drivers ratio than North America.

Geography may have something to do with it. Where are the refineries
that produce your gasoline. I live about halfway between the refineries
in New Jersey & those along the Gulf Coast; and halfway between two
pipeline terminals located here in NC. Our gas prices aren't as high as
they might be if it had to be trucked in from Virginia or South Carolina.

I know the reason North Carolina's gas tax is higher than South Carolina
and Virginia is we have more miles of State Maintained roads & we keep
them in better repair (because the state constitution won't allow the
legislature to use the money for anything else or they'd have already
looted it.)

Looking at GasBuddy, I see that gas in California is around $3.50/gallon
in Los Angeles, $3.00/gallon in San Francisco, $3.00/gallon in
Sacramento - a case where high taxes are intended to discourage
consumption. Yet, Alaska, which has half the gas tax that California
imposes, still has prices as high or higher than California ... because
of geography, they're so damn far from the refineries.

That really confirms Australians are being ripped off by the major oil
companies. To buy 3.79
litres (= 1 US gallon) would currently cost me A$5.12 = US$3.78. We were

when the price ofa barrel of oil was $150, now it's down to $50 and we're still
paying A$1.35.
And our Australian Consumer association says it's legit?

Had to fill up my tank today & gas was $1.959/gallon.

The last time I found gas for under $2.00/gallon in North Carolina was April
2009.

For that matter, there are certain places in Virginia & South Carolina that I
always look for cheap
gas when I'm traveling (because SC & VA have a lower gas tax & so, are always
cheaper), and April
2009 was the last time I found gas for less than $2.00/gallon there as well.
