Not really-our Excise Duty on fuel has been 38.5c per litre for four years, and
the GST at 10% has
been the same for over a dozen years, so fluctuations in crude price should be
reflected to some
extent in the bowser price. Given these overheads have not changed, I'd like
to know the reason for
the lack of response to very significant changes in the cost of the base
component. Also, if we can
have the wild price fluctuations we get even during a single week (price
varying from $1.25 on
Tuesday to $1.45 on Friday) and everyone involved can still make a profit, why
not smooth out the
prices and make a steady return? In response to another reader, I live 10k
from the state refinery,
so distance is not an issue. Paradoxically, relatives who live almost 100k
north of here often are
able to pay 15-20c less per litre than I can on the same day!

it's down to $50 and we're still paying A$1.35.

Presumably, as here, most of what you pay is tax and duty, so relatively
unaffected by changes on
crude price.
