No autofocus on that lens, so it defaults to the single central focus point as a focus aid. When I use my copy(s) on the K20D the split image rangefinder on the KatzEye focus screen usually agrees with the focus confirmation, but doesn't always, and the rangefinder is more often right.

I assume that Frank is just going off the K10D stock focus screen, but I also assume he'll chime in with his technique eventually.

First idea that occurs to me ...

How do you have the autofocus set on the camera? Multi-point or single
point? If it's single point, which point is it set to?

I used to have the hood!

It friction - fit on the filter ring and was secured by a small
knurled screw. Not the most secure system, I lost the hood one day

Yesterday's foray with the lens was a huge disappointment. It kept
focusing several feet behind the subject. I don't know how that
could happen as I have no problem focusing with my M 200mm and Tamron
90mm macro, both of which I use often. If it's focused on the
focusing screen why wouldn't it actually be in focus? If the focusing
screen is somehow askew shouldn't all my manual focus lenses suffer
similarly?

I don't get it...

Cheers,
