You've probably had this site pointed out to you a dozen times by now,
but here it is anyway. The best by far:

follow the links to rebuilding a NiCad Pack LX.

Rob's site is excellent, but I would add one tip. Most battery sellers can
have the packs made for you (and shrink wrapped together), saving you some
some of the work. The charge for building the packs is usually fairly low.

Bernd is correct about the sensitivity of NiMH batteries to overcharge. An
inexpensive timer (like one of those vacation light timers you can get for
your lamps) will solve this problem (also not a bad idea with NiCd packs,
too). Ever since I started celling my packs with NiMH cells, I have been
telling myself that I need to find time to build a smart charger (or better
yet, a smart fast charger) for the packs. I never seemed to get it done,
though. Perhaps now that I have picked my cameras back up...

The huge plus of NiMH packs is that they are less succeptable to memory
issues so you can charge partially discharged packs w/o worry. If you use
NiMH packs, you can build them from 1/3 AA cells. They range from 225 mah to
300 mah. The NiCd cells suggested by the article are 1/3 A cells with a 225
mah rating. NiMH cells are also a bit more environmentally friendly.

Oh, and the 16 in my original post is a brain-fart ofsorts. Slow charge
times for 100 percent discharged cells can be calculated with the formula
(capacity mah / charge mah * 1.4). My packs are celled with 275 mah NiMH
cells, which works out to 16 hours.
<http://www.advanced-battery.com/BATTGUID.HTM> has a quick overview of basic
battery info.

Confused yet?
