I might give this a try - I have retained an XP box to run my scanner (Nikon LS8000) in part because it has firewire and in part to run Nikon scan. I was hoping to shift over to Ubuntu and VueScan but VueScan's support for medium format scanning on the LS8000 is not very good. The scanner and NIkon scan are rather finicky even running under native XP, but is the XP machine I'm using ever dies I may try emulating WInXP.

Depending on how often you need to use the software that only runs on XP,
your best solution may be to set up a Win XP virtual machine. That way if
you get an update the breaks everything, you can go to a previously backed
up version of the VM. You could also, if you want, copy that VM to other
computers, even a Mac or a Linux box.
Full endorsement of this!

I have VM's of Win98, WinXP, Win7 (and a few others like FreeBSD, and
a Linux distro or three). I can run and test any Windows crud I need
on my Mac and never get nuked. VMware, but there are free ones too.

The big question being is how much effort do you want to spend on saving a
little bit of work?
Silly question! Consider what mail list he's on.
