I'm in a similar situation with my Minolta Multi Pro as Firewire is not
supported by Virtualbox. My old G5 PowerMac no longer boots so I bought a
cheap Firewire card for my old Windows ME machine (the G5's predecessor, built
circa 2001). Works nicely and I use sneakernet to transfer the files.

FWIW I tried Vuescan on my current Mac and wasn't able to coax usable results
out of it. I ended up with wonky colour casts that I wasn't able to correct.
The Minolta software is very good but it predates Intel Macs. I just love
progress.

I don't think there are any virtualisation systems that will handle a Firewire
scanner (let me know if you find one), so if your XP machine dies you may have
to scrounge parts to build another one.

Cheers,
Dave
