REDUX ... I ran out of space on my harddrive & had to replace it with a larger drive. Supposed to be a simple job with Windoze. Make a backup image on a USB drive. Create a Windoze repair disk. Shut down, swap in the new drive.
Boot the repair disk and restore from the backup image. Run Disk Manager to extend the partition onto the rest of the drive. NO JOY! The Windoze repair disk can't find the backup image unless the original C:\ drive is in the system, and then it won't restore to any other disk. Finally ended up having to UN-install enough programs to make room for some free drive cloning software, which the whole point of trying to go the backup & restore route was so I wouldn't have to UN-install anything. But it works, and I've got 100GB free space on a 300GB drive. Only problem now is I'm getting a buzz from the computer every 30 sec or so, lasting about 15 sec. I'm pretty sure it means I didn't tie up the extra power cables inside & they're rubbing against the CPU cooling fan. Just as soon as I hit send for this, I gotta' open the box again and fix that. Besides being annoying, I worry about something wearing enough to let the magic smoke out. No biggie, but definitely a PITA. -- Science - Questions we may never find answers for.
