I thought those had been consigned to history but the new Olympus Pen-F
has the thread for a screw-in release in the shutter button.  If Olympus
can do it, why not the rest?

Because most people aren't willing to spend the extra $5 it costs to make a camera that can use an obsolete shutter release cable when they can get an electronic one for about the same money.
