Larry's solution has some merit, but it's too kludgy..

If you think that there is a market for people who want to use mechanical shutter releases, it would be trivial to design and build a switch that had an input for the mechanical shutter release and was able to plug into the jack for the electronic remote. Have it built in China and it probably would not cost much more to sell than one of the intervalometers that double as a remote trigger release.
