I have one, bought around 18 years ago - a one owner. They were still
available new in Japan then, but I got mine domestically.
I've had pro Nikon users ask to examine it - the were well aware of its
reputation.
Extremely well built with a great feel to it. Can produce extraordinary
images.

There were legendary A* 200 macros, I know some list members have a copy.
One on eBay right now with a BIN of $3300 IIRC. That is a fair price.
There were a handful of FA* 200 macros; I had one and sold it to another
list member.
And there have been some off-brand 180mm macros with a good reputation.
But the market for macro lenses in general and for long macros in
particular just doesn’t seem to support a high volume (and lower cost)
product.

It seems that the longest macro currently produced for K-mount might be
about 100mm. I've heard mention of a 200mm, and I have an old manual
focus 135 1:2 macro.
Two part question:
What are the options for long focal length macros? How are they
optically? Are there any teleconverters that do well? Or, am I just
better off cropping tighter?
In a similar vein, are there technical reasons for the dearth of long
macro lenses? Or is it just that the market for them is too small for
them to be commercially viable?
