Think of Olympus position this way. Canon and Nikon are stuck with their 24x36 platforms because of their huge user base while Olympus has been phasing out for years. Olympus does a little research and finds that it is difficult to produce 24x36 CCD or CMOS sensors even given significant evolution in manufacturing technology and that the optimal price point/manufacturing ease/highest megapixel density is with a 4/3 inch chip. Further they find that they can design and sell an equivalent 17-35/2, 35-100/2, 80/200/2, 300/2, 400/2.8 & 600/4 lens for half what the competition is doing in a system that not only has the same resolution and capabilities and weighs a fraction of the traditional systems. We'll see how it all works out in 5 years.
