They were equipped with generators and the lump is a cut-out relay - an early version of a voltage regulator. When the battery voltage reached a certain level, the relay contacts opened.

0170.  I'm not familiar with the Model T engine.  What's the lump on the top of
the starter motor/alternator?  The electrical connection seems to be to earth
and therefore superfluous.
