The earthquake I remember being discussed was a 7.0 on April 16.

That was some time ago.
This was more recently, I don't remember exactly who, but I think it was
a camera review site, mentioned some kind of major disruption in Japan,
which was going to make all the new products being announced, a couple
of months ago, be scarce on the ground.

I remember discussion here that an earthquake had damaged a "chip"
manufacturing facility & speculation that might cause additional delays
delivering the K-1 to those who did not already have pre-ordered units
in the delivery queue. I wouldn't think that would affect the price of
lenses, but it could be the excuse they're hanging a general price
increase on.

If I remember correctly there was an issue with made in Japan equipment,
especially Nikon and Canon not that long ago due to some sort of natural
disaster. The price rise could be due to that.

I'm about ready to finally buy a Pentax DA 1.4x teleconverter, and the
price has gone from $460 to $550 to $600 at B&H and Adorama over the
past month or so.
