’Thanks, John.  That was it. I meant to be shooting in AF.C mode but it 
accidentally got switched to AF.S mode and the action priority was focus.

I’m not finding any way to separate them in AF.C mode, either. The action 
priority options are focus priority or maintaining capture frame rate priority. 
So I’m guessing that in AF.C I have the option of pressing the shutter release 
halfway or using the AF button.
