I heard about the quake just before we went to bed last night - glad to
hear that Christchurch seems to have escaped serious damage. I wondered
about Kaikoura - I remember it as a beautiful coastal town with majestic
snow-capped mountains to the west. I hope damage there is minimal and
that no lives have been lost.

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. GNS revised their reading to 7.5 so
it was a pretty big one. I went back to bed around 3am and haven't
noticed anything since. It's nice when it's far enough away that you
don't get aftershocks waking you up every few minutes.
Looks like there's a bit of destruction around the Kaikoura region.
Might be a while before the roads reopen up there as there are a couple
of broken bridges and impressive landslides.
Tsunami-wise we may have dodged a bullet as the area off the Kaikoura
coast is known to be prone to underwater landslides. A small one was
generated and looking at a tide gauge it appears that the sea bed may
have been lifted by about 700mm (27.5") by the quake.

Just reporting in safe & well after another decent shake. It wasn't too
intense but seemed to go on for a long time.
GNS have it at 6.6 but USGS say 7.4. It was a little way north from here
but was enough to wake up half the country. Our baby slept right through,
daddy will be awake for a while yet :) We're feeling the larger aftershocks
but they're pretty gentle by the time they reach us. I don't expect any
damage to our place.
I really would prefer it if these damn things would happen during the day!
Cheers,
Dave
