desktop folder on top of the images.
Another possibility is to use the screen saver on hot corners. It nearly
works OK, except that you cannot set how long the photos are displayed
for.
I did finally find a program called Phoenix Slides

I'm pleased to say that it actually works quite well, and wanted to share
the link with anyone else that might want to set up a slideshow of their
photos.
