Tips are easy. Divide the whole number of dollars by 5. That's how many
dollars tip to leave. If the remainder is more than .5 add another dollar.

Some may consider that extravagant, but I find waiters & waitresses
remember good tippers & you get better service over the long haul.

Of course, that only works for the U.S. Other places have different
rules & I understand some places in Europe even consider tipping is an
insult.

In the UK the norm is 10%. I prefer to tip in cash as some places take
months to dole out tips added to card purchases, if ever. If the service
is lousy of course I don't tip. Plenty of places add an automatic tip of
up to 12.5% which is atrocious and I would contest that and not go there
again.

It's become kind of problematic in the U.S. the minimum wage laws are
structured so that restaurants can pay staff less because they are
expected to receive tips as part of their wages. It *should* be a
gratuity for good service, but some places if you don't tip, the wait
staff doesn't get paid. Ironically, the places that do that are more
likely to have bad service and usually it's not the wait staff's fault.

There are some places where a gratuity is automatically added to the
bill when the party is larger than a certain number of people.
