We all had Nicknames -- or "handles" as they were called.  We painted
"Black Max" and "Cossack" on our airplane, which was one of the very few to
bear the number 13.  In reality, he was "Max Gross" because when he took
his semiannual flight physical, the flight surgeon would ask the corpsman
"What's the max weight allowed for a 6'0" flight crew," and would then
write in that number (ie, the max gross weight.)  I was the Mad Russian,
because in boot camp, the redneck drill sergeant asked what the hell kind
of name "Matalooa" was, and when I said it was Rusyn, he responded:  "I
knew it, I knew it, your're a Mad Rooshian spy sent here to f*** up my
mind."
