Thanks, Igor. The contacts on the lens look fine. Since this problem only happens with this lens and appears on multiple bodies, it clearly is the lens that is at issue. Since flicker shows a lot of exif info I compared what it shows for shots with my lens verses Larry's copy of the same lens. His data shows lens name and lens model, data which is missing from images I've taken. His also shows subject to lens distance, which also is missing from mine. The only piece of lens specific data I could find in my images was the Lens ID code, which appears to be correct (at least the same as others.)

I also uploaded a JPG to flickr - it showed no lens data as well, not even the lens id code.

I still have the very first image I took with this lens and it is the same - no lens data.

Looks like its time for a warranty repair. At least I have the Tamron 28-75 as a fall back.

Hi Mark,

Here are my thoughts (but you might have already had all of them yourself..) Your photoshop could have a problem if it's RAW module version is older than the lens. But since Flickr doesn't show that name either, I'd assume it is not there. (A slim chance if that PS strips it out ... So, a good test would be to take one shot in JPEG, and upload it as is, without opening in PS, LR, or whatever.)

So, the culprit is likely to be in the lens hardware.
AFAIK, the lens ID is encoded by an electric contact on the lens.
Unfortunately, upon a quick search, I was unable to find which of the contacts resonsible for it.

You can just check that contact (or all of them). If it has some grease or goo on it, that might prevent it from working. I would try using a q-tip lightly soaked (not dripping) in isopropanol or methanol or ethanol (I am usually using "rubbing alcohol" - that's 70% or so isopropanol - it is also good for removing pencil marks from the wall paint if used carefully -- it can also remove the paint).

One more thought: I've never worked on those contacts, but I've successfully used pencil erasers on the hot-shoe contacts. with the lens, however, I'd be concerned not to get any rubber crumbles onto the back elements and ultimately inside camera/on the sensor.

Good luck!

Igor

I just noticed that my DFA 28-105 f3.5-5.6 does not show up in EXIF data. I've tried it on the K1 and the K3 and in both cases when I view file info in Photoshop the lens field in blank. I noticed this because uploads to flickr with this lens also do not show any lens data. I tried a couple other EXIF viewers with the same result. Both cameras correctly record lens data for other lenses.

There are images on flickr that show this lens in the EXIF data (e.g. Larry's photostream)... It appears that my specific copy though is not producing EXIF info. I'm wondering if this is something to be concerned about WRT my copy of this lens? Aside form this, it has been operating perfectly.

Any thoughts?

Mark
