Yeah, most people are buying the cheap zoom instead of the expensive primes. Surprise! More than 95% of all lenses sold are zooms. And 95% of those zooms are probably cheap consumer stuff. A consumer zoom is both cheaper and lighter than the primes covering the same focal length range. Now to the discussion you do above: nobody will compare a zoom to a single prime lens. A 28-70 zoom is all focal lengths between 28 and 70mm in one lens. I personally prefer primes to zooms and I currently own only one zoom lens and that's the fish-eye zoom. I prefer the 31, 43, 77 Limited combination to the FA* 28-70/2.8. I will, however, switch to zoom for my medium format camera because there are significant weight reductions to be had.
