The macro range is when the front element is fully extended giving, in your
case, 1:1 (life size) images. Small DOF & poor AF in this range. I have an F
35-105 which at, 105mm, has a weak macro capability. I find I can only use
it successfully in M mode.

Thanks, Alan!
It seems that the number and variety of bees -- and butterflies -- are down
this year from the recent past. I don't know if it is because this has
been a rainy summer and there are more alternatives, or if the insect
population is decreasing. I avoid using insecticides on my property, out
of concern for our dog as well as the butterflies and bees.
I don't know what you mean by asking if the images are close-ups or macros.
Although I have what wi called a close-up lens or filter to put in from of
the usual lens, I have not used that is decades, I have a 35 mm Macro,
which doesn't work well on butterflies as I have to get too close. All of
my current insect images are taken with the heavy FA 100 mm F 2.8 Macro
lens, which has a limited to prevent it from going far afield when using
auto focus.
Thanks for looking and for your kind comments.

Dan, I'm enjoying your insect shots. That lens seems to be ideal for the
job. Not sure if they are close ups or macros? Perhaps the bee is macro?
Pity it has a black abdomen - a yellow/black striped one would really have
stood out. I enquired about butterfly bushes a while back but the local
nurseries don't know what I am talking about. I have tried some insect
shots with the lenses I have (only slow zooms) but can't get anywhere near
your standards.
