It is not a valid way of starting new threads because the message with the
changed subject and all replies to it remain part of the original thread.

Email headers contain a variety of information, and changing the subject field
does not change the references field upon which threading and archiving depend.
The only way to start a new thread is to write an entirely new message with the
new subject (unless one is an IT geek who fully understands headers and how to
edit them to fool the mailing list software, and even for an IT geek it is
easier to just create a new message). As far as the email software is concerned
changing the subject affects nothing because the software does not parse the
subject field to determine threading, it parses the references field to
determine threading.
