What I miss here lately, and what I can not get on FaceBook, is
intelligent and constructive criticism.
Ten years ago, and even 3 or 4 years ago, I would post an image and more
experienced and talented members of the group would give me honest -- and
sometimes even brutal -- criticisms, More often, a post would draw
comments on what was interesting and good about the image, what
aspects were weak or dissonant, and what could have been done, or still

amount by reading the discussion of other people's photos.
could be done, to make it stronger. Now, a few people will let me know if
they think one of my submissions has some merit. If I get no response to a
PESO, I get the message that no one particularly likes it, but it has been
quite some time since I received some critical feedback, and even longer
since I saw any negative feedback.
Part of that is your fault, your photography is better so the reasons to
give negative feedback are much smaller. When I'm teaching people
driving at the race track they generally start out with a few very big
problems. It's generally fairly easy to decide which one or two things
to work on. At a certain point, we've taken care of the few big issues,
then that leaves the little things. In a quantitative field like driving
on a track, the danger is in overwhelming the student with too many
little things. In an artistic field like photography any one of those
little things can be a matter of taste where some people will agree with
the proposed change and others not.
I think we have become more and more like FaceBook, where people will
"like" an image, but not go much beyond that. There have been a few images
in the recent past that have provoked interesting and meaningful
discussions on composition, lighting,l exposure or other aspects of the
work, but those seem to me few and far between. Much more common are posts
with no feedback or with a comment like "pretty butterfly." Everyone likes

to hear that the subject of their image is attractive, but that is no
substitute for the kinds of intense discussions and debates that went on
here when the number of active participants was higher.
Joking aside, I agree with you wholeheartedly. The quality of feedback
on this list was among the highest I've seen online. The feedback I see
these days is still very good, but it's a lot less frequent.
Just the grumblings of an old grouch.

I think a lot of us are still her, but just resting, after all,
Ricoh/Pentax doesn't have the release schedule of Sony, Canon, Nikon or
even Panasonic, so talking about hardware is kind of redundant, after
all how much navel gazing can one do about cameras that only change
every 2 years.
Hell it's not like Sony throwing spaghetti at the wall with three
different versions of the same camera with release dates only a few
months, at most apart, or Canon bringing out a new entry model every 6
months or so, with often only minor changes from the previous version,
pushing the previous model down a step until it somewhere falls off
Canon's current list.
On the other hand, if you want to navel gaze about once and future
cameras there's always the Pentax Fora.
Some of us would contribute more if someone hadn't already beaten us to
the punch, after all what else can you say to a great or merely good
photo when someone else has already expressed, more or less, your
thoughts except, me too. That gets old after a while, even for the
poster.
Everyone here is too accomplished to post any photograph that's really
bad here, except maybe for me, and usually I've been drinking.

That is hopeful news.
Does the PDML have a future? It seems there are fewer participants each
month.
