If I understand you right, you're unable to activate the meter without
tripping the shutter, right?  I had one of mine start doing this a
little over a year ago, and against all good judgment, I dropped a
little WD40 from a toothpick down the cable release socket and then dry
fired the camera a few times.  Works just like it should with no
problems since.
