When I was a teenager I had a summer job in a hardware store. One of the old
boys who worked there was Reg, who'd fought Rommel in the desert. A regular
customer was a rather stuck-up, posh lady called Mrs Sandicock, which she
insisted was pronounced Sandicoe. Whenever she came in Reg made a point of
pronouncing her name very loudly, as written, and as she was leaving he would
turn to me and say "Always puts me in mind of my time in the desert, that
woman".
