Duh! I didn't catch that the procession was on Aug 15; I thought is was
just recently.

The feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is indeed a major religious
festival in many Roman Catholic countries. We discovered that yeas ago
when we visited Zermatt on August 15. They refer to it as Mariä
Himmelfahrt,
and it is a major event in that part of Switzerland (which produced most of
the Vatican's Swiss Guards). In addition to special masses and religious
processions, they have a huge folk festival with music, beer, singing,
beer, dancing, beer, food, and beer. The festival included a competition
among dozens of Alpenhorn groups, which then paraded through the Village.

As if the mountain wasn't enough excitement for a sleepy mountain town.
